FDA approved new drugs to treat drug-resistant tuberculosis

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) licensed Pretomanid drugs to treat TB at a dose of 4 tablets daily for 6 months.
Pretomanid drugs are prepared by non-profit organization TB Alliance, jointly with Bedaquiline - the type of treatment for TB since 2012, and Linezolid antibiotics. This new treatment regimen was approved by the FDA on August 14, effective in the treatment of MDR-TB and MDDR-TB (XDR-TB).
Previously, 107 patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis in South Africa participated in a clinical trial of the three drugs. After 6 months, 97 people ran out of illness.
Current treatments of TB drug resistance are complex, patients must take 8 drugs, some daily for at least 18 months. Some older regimens may cause hearing damage.

According to the World Health Organization, tuberculosis causes 4,400 people to die every day in the world, more than 500,000 cases of drug-resistant TB out of a total of 10 million cases of TB each year. Super-resistant tuberculosis is now resistant to 4 antibiotics that doctors are using.
"Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and super-TB tuberculosis are now a threat to the community because modern medicine has no effective treatment," said Amy Abernethy, deputy chief executive of the FDA.
Pretomanid is the third anti-tuberculosis drug approved by FDA for the past 40 years. Hope Pretomanid scientists will be put to treatment in the US later this year, approved by the European Drug Administration and the World Health Organization.
Dr Mel Spigelman, TB Alliance President, said: "With the emergence of Pretomanid, we look forward to providing a shorter, more easily controlled and effective treatment regimen for patients."
